The son of writer and resistance fighter René Tavernier, he began his career in cinema as an assistant director and press officer, notably working with Stanley Kubrick, before establishing himself as a respected film critic.

Tavernier made his directorial debut with the acclaimed film "The Watchmaker of Saint-Paul," which marked the beginning of a fruitful partnership with actor Philippe Noiret. Their collaboration produced several notable films, including "Let the Party Begin...," "The Judge and the Assassin," "Coup de torchon," "Life and Nothing But," and "The Daughter of d'Artagnan."

His versatile filmmaking style ranged from comedic dramas like "A Sunday in the Country" and "Daddy Nostalgia" to intense war narratives such as "Captain Conan" and historical epics like "The Princess of Montpensier." Tavernier’s work spanned various genres, including thrillers like "L.627" and "The Bait." His film "Autour de minuit" received an Academy Award and garnered a Golden Globe nomination, showcasing his international acclaim.

In 1982, he became the founding president of the Lumière Institute and held the position until his passing. Tavernier's legacy lives on through his children, Nils Tavernier, a director and actor, and Tiffany Tavernier, a novelist.
