Sowcar Janaki
Sankaramanchi Janaki, widely known as Sowcar Janaki, was born on December 12, 1931. A distinguished actress in South Indian cinema, she has made an indelible mark in the film industry, with appearances in more than 385 films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and Malayalam. In addition to her extensive film career, Janaki showcased her talent on stage, participating in over 300 performances and starring in two Telugu plays in the United States for TANA, under the direction of actor Murali Mohan.
Janaki's journey in acting began at a young age; by 11, she was already a radio artist on Telugu broadcasts. Her professional acting career took off when she was a new mother, and she quickly gained fame with notable films like "Sowcar" in Telugu, "Pudhiya Paravai," and "Iru Kodugal" in Tamil. Throughout her career, she collaborated with some of the industry's most acclaimed directors, including Dada Mirasee and K. Balachander.
Born to T. Venkoji Rao, a paper technologist from England, and Sachi Devi, Janaki completed her matriculation at Gauhati University in Assam. In recognition of her contributions to the arts, she was awarded an honorary Doctorate from the University of Arizona. Sowcar Janaki's legacy continues to inspire aspiring actors in the Indian film industry.
