Georg Albert Ruthenberg, widely recognized by his stage name Pat Smear, was born on August 5, 1959. He is an influential American musician, primarily celebrated for his role as the rhythm guitarist in the rock band Foo Fighters, with whom he has contributed to the creation of six studio albums. Smear's musical journey began as a founding member of the iconic punk band the Germs. Later, he served as the touring guitarist for the legendary grunge band Nirvana from 1993 until the band's dissolution in 1994 following the tragic death of frontman Kurt Cobain.

After Nirvana, drummer Dave Grohl transitioned to the role of frontman for Foo Fighters, and Smear quickly became a part of the lineup as a guitarist. Although he initially departed from the band in 1997, he returned in 2005 as a touring guitarist. Smear has been a full-time member of Foo Fighters since 2010, further solidifying his place in rock music history. His dynamic guitar work and stage presence have made him a vital part of the band's identity, contributing to their continued success and influence in the rock genre.
