Mario Montez

René Rivera, who adopted the stage name Mario Montez, was born on July 20, 1935, and passed away on September 26, 2013. He emerged as a prominent figure in the New York City underground film movement during the 1960s and was notably one of Andy Warhol's superstars, featuring in thirteen of Warhol's avant-garde films between 1964 and 1966. Montez chose his moniker as a tribute to the iconic actress Maria Montez, a celebrated gay icon of the 1950s and 60s.

Before his collaboration with Warhol, Montez gained recognition for his roles in groundbreaking underground films directed by Jack Smith, including the influential works Flaming Creatures and Normal Love. Additionally, in 1964, he showcased his talents in Ron Rice's film Chumlum, further solidifying his presence in the avant-garde cinema scene.

Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Mario Montez became a defining presence within the New York underground landscape, captivating audiences with his unique performances and embodying the spirit of artistic rebellion.
