Randy Gardner
Randy Gardner, born on December 2, 1958, is a distinguished former pair skater from the United States. He is best known for his partnership with Tai Babilonia, with whom he achieved remarkable success in the world of figure skating. The duo captured the gold medal at the 1979 World Figure Skating Championships and secured five consecutive titles at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships from 1976 to 1980. They represented the U.S. at both the 1976 and 1980 Winter Olympics, where they were considered strong medal contenders.
Gardner and Babilonia began their skating journey as young children, teaming up when Gardner was ten and Babilonia was eight. Under the guidance of their initial coach, Mabel Fairbanks, and later John Nicks, they quickly rose through the ranks. They made an impressive debut at the U.S. Nationals, clinching the junior title in 1973, and soon after, they earned senior medals in 1974 and 1975. Their competitive career was cut short when Gardner suffered a thigh injury prior to the 1980 Olympics, leading to their withdrawal.
Following their competitive days, Gardner and Babilonia toured with the Ice Capades for four years and performed with Champions on Ice for two years. They also triumphed at the World Professional Championships in 1985. In 2008, they announced their retirement from performing due to Gardner's neck injury and their advancing ages. In a personal revelation in 2006, Gardner publicly came out as gay.
