Originally from an assimilated Jewish-Romanian family, Karmitz immigrated to France in 1948. He pursued his passion for cinema by enrolling at IDHEC, which later became known as La Fémis, where he specialized in film studies and developed his skills as a director of photography upon graduation.

In 1974, Karmitz established MK2, a pioneering production company and cinema chain that has been dedicated to supporting and showcasing independent and auteur cinema. Under his leadership, MK2 became synonymous with innovative filmmaking, distributing a wide array of notable films and shorts that have garnered critical acclaim.

Karmitz's contributions to the cinematic world extend beyond production; he played a vital role in creating spaces for independent filmmakers to thrive. In 2005, he handed over the reins of MK2 and its theaters to his son, Nathanaël, ensuring the continuation of his legacy in promoting independent artistry.
