Jon Plowman

Jon Plowman was born and raised in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, and later attended University College, Oxford. While studying there, he became involved with the University College Players, forming lasting friendships with future comedy icons, including Mel Smith, who directed him in a notable production of *Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead*. After his time at Oxford, Plowman followed Smith to the Royal Court Theatre, where he encountered influential director Lindsay Anderson. His early career began in theatre before transitioning to television at Granada TV.

Plowman made a significant impact at the BBC, where he produced and commissioned several acclaimed in-house programmes, most notably *The Office* and *French & Saunders*. In October 2005, he was appointed Head of Comedy, overseeing the BBC's comedy production while stepping back from commissioning roles. After 27 years with the BBC, Plowman announced his departure in June 2007, opting to work as a freelance producer. He aimed to maintain collaborations with the BBC, producing content "for them and elsewhere."

In recognition of his contributions, *The Observer* named him one of the '50 Funniest or Most Influential People in British Comedy' in December 2003. Additionally, he received the prestigious 'Judges' Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Television' at the Royal Television Society awards on March 14, 2006. Plowman later ventured into theatre, co-producing the stage adaptation of Carl Hiaasen's bestseller *Lucky You*, which premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2008.
