Arthur Rubinstein (Polish: Artur Rubinstein; 28 January 1887 – 20 December 1982) was a renowned Polish-American pianist celebrated as one of the greatest musicians in history. Notably acclaimed for his interpretations of works by a diverse range of composers, he is particularly revered as one of the finest interpreters of Frédéric Chopin. His extraordinary career spanned an impressive eight decades, during which he captivated audiences worldwide.

Born in Łódź, Congress Poland (then part of the Russian Empire), Rubinstein was the youngest of seven children in a Jewish family. His father, Izaak Rubinstein, owned a small textile factory. Initially named Leo, he was renamed Artur at the behest of his older brother, who believed the name would inspire musical greatness. In English-speaking regions, he preferred to be known as Arthur, but his U.S. impresario, Sol Hurok, insisted on the original name.

Rubinstein exhibited remarkable musical talent from a young age, including absolute pitch at just two years old, and was recognized as a child prodigy by the age of four. His formal education in music began in Berlin, where he debuted with the Berlin Philharmonic at 13, guided by the esteemed pianist Karl Heinrich Barth. In 1904, Rubinstein moved to Paris to further establish his career, forging connections with notable composers and musicians such as Maurice Ravel and Camille Saint-Saëns. His passion for music and unique artistry left an indelible mark on the world, making him an enduring legend.
