Elissa Landi (December 6, 1904 – October 21, 1948) was an Italian actress renowned for her contributions to Hollywood cinema during the 1920s and 1930s. Allegedly a descendant of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, Landi was distinguished by her regal demeanor. Born Elisabeth Marie Christine Kühnelt in Venice, she grew up in Austria and received her education in England.

Initially aspiring to be a novelist, she penned her first book at the age of twenty and continued to write in between her acting endeavors. Landi honed her craft with the Oxford Repertory Company, participating in numerous acclaimed stage productions in both Britain and America.

Her film career commenced in the 1920s across British, French, and German cinema. She made her way to the United States to star in a Broadway adaptation of A Farewell to Arms, which led to a contract with Fox Film Corporation in 1931. Landi is perhaps best remembered for her role as the heroine in Cecil B. De Mille's The Sign of the Cross (1932), despite being upstaged by Claudette Colbert. She starred alongside notable actors like David Manners and Robert Donat, with her performance in The Count of Monte Cristo (1934) marking a significant box office success.

After leaving Fox in 1936, she joined Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, finding success in films like After the Thin Man (1936). Following a brief retirement in 1943, she became a naturalized U.S. citizen and focused on her writing, producing six novels and a collection of poems. Elissa Landi passed away from cancer in Kingston, New York, and rests at Oak Hill Cemetery in Newburyport, Massachusetts. She is honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located at 1615 Vine St., celebrating her impact on the film industry.
