She is a pioneering American boxer celebrated for her significant role in bringing women's boxing into the mainstream during the 1990s. Known as “The Coal Miner’s Daughter,” Martin's professional career spanned from 1989 to 2012, during which she achieved an impressive record of 49 victories—32 of which were by knockout—alongside 7 losses and 3 draws. A notable milestone in her career was becoming the first female boxer to be signed by the legendary promoter Don King. In a groundbreaking moment for women in sports, she graced the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1996 after her memorable fight against Deirdre Gogarty, which took place on the undercard of a Mike Tyson match. In 2009, she captured the WBC super welterweight title and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020, marking a historic moment as it was the first year women were eligible for induction.
Beyond her boxing achievements, Martin's personal life has been a testament to her strength and resilience. A survivor of domestic violence, she faced a life-threatening situation in 2010 when her then-husband and trainer attacked her, leading to his conviction for attempted murder. Since then, she has become a vocal advocate for domestic violence awareness and LGBTQ+ rights, proudly identifying as a lesbian and marrying fellow boxer Lisa Holewyne in 2017. Today, Martin runs her own promotional company, works as a boxing analyst, and inspires many as a motivational speaker. Her life story was featured in the Netflix documentary *Untold: Deal With the Devil* (2021), highlighting her enduring impact both in and out of the ring.
