P.J. Hogan

1 title Directing Nov 30, 1962 Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

P.J. Hogan, born Paul John Hogan on November 30, 1962, in Brisbane, Queensland, is a prominent Australian film director known for his distinctive storytelling and engaging comedies. Raised on the North Coast of New South Wales, Hogan faced challenges during his teenage years, including bullying while attending Mt St Patrick's College.

Hogan's breakthrough came with the 1994 film *Muriel's Wedding*, which not only became a cultural phenomenon in Australia but also propelled the careers of its stars, Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths. This success caught the attention of Julia Roberts, leading to Hogan's American debut with the romantic comedy *My Best Friend's Wedding* in 1997, which featured a stellar cast including Cameron Diaz and Dermot Mulroney.

Following this success, Hogan directed *Unconditional Love* (filmed in 1999 but released in 2003) and the ambitious live-action adaptation of *Peter Pan* in 2003, featuring Jason Isaacs as Captain Hook. He also directed a pilot for the remake of the cult classic soap opera *Dark Shadows*, although it did not make it to air. Hogan contributed to the 2008 musical *The American Mall* and adapted the novel *The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic* into the film *Confessions of a Shopaholic* (2009), starring Isla Fisher. Looking ahead, he is set to direct a film based on Blue Balliett's novel *Chasing Vermeer*.

In his personal life, P.J. Hogan is married to fellow director Jocelyn Moorhouse.
