Fred Grandy, born in Sioux City, Iowa, was the youngest of three sons in the family of William Grandy, an insurance businessman, and his wife, Bonnie. Tragically, Fred experienced the loss of both parents at a young age; his father passed away from a heart attack when Fred was just eleven, followed by his mother's death from an aneurysm a year later.

Following these hardships, Fred was raised by Margaret Avery, a close family friend who later married his father's doctor. He initially attended public schools, before transferring to Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, a prestigious institution that his father and siblings had also attended.

While at Exeter, Grandy formed a notable friendship with David Eisenhower, the grandson of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and he would later serve as the best man at Eisenhower's wedding to Julie Nixon, the daughter of then-president-elect Richard Nixon, in December 1968.

In 1970, Grandy graduated magna cum laude with a degree in English from Harvard University. He became involved with an improvisational theater group at Harvard called "The Proposition," later joining the cast as the group transitioned to an off-Broadway venue in 1971, where he performed alongside future "Saturday Night Live" star Jane Curtin. Although eligible for the Vietnam draft, Grandy was fortunate to have a high lottery number, exempting him from service during the conflict.
