Barry Jenkins, born on November 19, 1979, is a distinguished American filmmaker known for his impactful storytelling and compelling visuals. He began his cinematic journey with the short film *My Josephine* in 2003 and made his feature film debut with *Medicine for Melancholy* in 2008, which earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Feature. Jenkins is also a notable member of the creative collective known as The Chopstars.

After a significant eight-year break from feature films, Jenkins made a remarkable return with the poignant LGBTQ drama *Moonlight* in 2016. This film garnered widespread acclaim, securing the Academy Award for Best Picture. Jenkins himself was nominated for Best Director, making history as the fourth Black filmmaker to receive this nomination, and he shared the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay with Tarell Alvin McCraney.

In 2018, he continued to impress audiences with *If Beale Street Could Talk*, which also received critical acclaim and earned him nominations for both the Academy Awards and Golden Globes for his screenplay.

Jenkins has made notable contributions to television as well. In 2017, he directed an episode of the Netflix series *Dear White People*, and in 2021, he created and directed the Amazon limited series *The Underground Railroad*, which was recognized with a Primetime Emmy nomination and a Peabody Award. In 2017, he was featured in Time magazine's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
