Melissa Lou Etheridge, born on May 29, 1961, is a celebrated American singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose career has left an indelible mark on the music industry. Etheridge burst onto the scene in 1988 with her self-titled debut album, which achieved underground acclaim, peaking at No. 22 on the Billboard 200. Its lead single, "Bring Me Some Water," earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female in 1989. Her sophomore effort, *Brave and Crazy*, also released that year, brought her two additional Grammy nominations.

In 1992, she released *Never Enough*, featuring the hit single "Ain't It Heavy," which secured her first Grammy Award. Etheridge's mainstream breakthrough came with her 1993 album *Yes I Am*, which yielded successful singles such as "I'm the Only One," "If I Wanted To," and "Come to My Window," the latter winning her a second Grammy. This album spent an impressive 138 weeks on the Billboard 200, achieving a peak position of No. 15 and earning a 6× Platinum certification.

Her subsequent albums, including *Your Little Secret* (1995), *Breakdown* (1999), and *Skin* (2001), further solidified her status. In 2004, Etheridge faced a breast cancer diagnosis but made a triumphant return to the stage at the Grammy Awards, delivering a memorable performance alongside Joss Stone. Over her career, she has released 16 studio albums, with her latest being *One Way Out* in 2021.

A passionate advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, Etheridge has received numerous accolades, including two Grammy Awards from 15 nominations and an Academy Award for Best Original Song for "I Need to Wake Up" from *An Inconvenient Truth* (2006).
