Wojciech Witold Jaruzelski (July 6, 1923 – May 25, 2014) was a prominent Polish military leader and politician who played a critical role in the history of the Polish People's Republic. Serving as the de facto leader from 1981 to 1989, he was a key figure during a tumultuous period in Poland's communist regime. As the First Secretary of the Polish United Workers' Party, he held the highest position in the party from 1981 until its dissolution in 1989, marking the end of an era for the country.

Jaruzelski's political career included significant positions such as Prime Minister, a role he fulfilled from 1981 to 1985, and Chairman of the Council of State from 1985 to 1989. His tenure saw the implementation of martial law in December 1981, a controversial move aimed at suppressing opposition, particularly the Solidarity movement. Following the fall of communism, he briefly served as President of Poland from 1989 to 1990, during which time the presidential office was reinstated after a 37-year hiatus.

Additionally, Jaruzelski was the last commander-in-chief of the Polish People's Army before it transitioned into the Polish Armed Forces in 1990. His legacy remains a subject of debate, reflecting the complexities of Poland's struggle for democracy and independence.
