John Paragon
John Dixon Paragon, born on December 9, 1954, in Anchorage, Alaska, is an accomplished American actor, writer, and director whose career spans several decades. Raised in Fort Collins, Colorado, Paragon made his mark in the entertainment industry primarily through his iconic roles in children's television.
He is perhaps best recognized for his portrayal of Jambi the Genie on the beloved series *Pee-wee's Playhouse*, where he also lent his voice to Pterri the Pterodactyl. Paragon contributed significantly to the show, penning numerous episodes and co-writing the celebrated *Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special* alongside Paul Reubens, earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Children's Special in 1988.
Beyond *Pee-wee's Playhouse*, Paragon showcased his versatility in various roles, including Cedric, one half of a gay couple on *Seinfeld*, and the titular character in the family film *The Frog Prince*. He also appeared in the cult classic *Eating Raoul* as a quirky sex shop salesman and played the owner of a Strip-o-gram business in *Echo Park* (1986).
Paragon’s career roots trace back to The Groundlings, an improvisational theater group in Los Angeles, where he worked with notable figures like Phil Hartman and Cassandra Peterson. In more recent years, he collaborated with Walt Disney Imagineering, integrating improvisational performance into Disney attractions, even portraying Lucky the Dinosaur's keeper during test runs. In a nostalgic return, he reprised his role as Jambi in the Broadway version of the *Pee-wee Herman Show*, which debuted on October 26, 2010, at the Stephen Sondheim Theater.
