David Bower
David Bower is a seasoned artist with over three decades of experience, driven by a deep belief in the transformative capabilities of art. He is particularly passionate about delving into the complexities of characters, revealing their journeys through both triumphs and tribulations. In 1987, David enhanced his skills by participating in the "Theatre of the Deaf" course at Bulmershe College of Further Education, where he explored the innovative techniques and cultural significance of Deaf Theatre. Influenced by his mentor, Geoff Buckley—a mime artist and close associate of Steven Berkoff—David learned that powerful storytelling can transcend words.
Under the guidance of his lifelong teacher and partner, Isolte Avila, he mastered the revolutionary Signdance Theatre methodology and embraced the philosophies of the California Institute of the Arts. David is perhaps best known for his role as Hugh Grant’s brother in Richard Curtis’ classic film Four Weddings and a Funeral. His work in radio has also been distinguished, earning him an APA Award nomination in 2021 for his portrayal of John Singer in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, as well as a best BBC radio production accolade for his role as Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, adapted by Jack Thorne and Alex Bulmer.
Rooted in Welsh Mancunian heritage, with family ties to Anglesey and Salford, David finds peace in nature, enjoys swimming and cycling, and has a fondness for literature, particularly works by Roger Deakin and Umberto Eco. Currently, he serves as the art director at Signdancecollective International while also engaging in various freelance projects.
