Bruno Sammartino
Bruno Leopoldo Francesco Sammartino was an iconic Italian-American professional wrestler whose legacy is deeply rooted in the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), now known as WWE. Rising to fame in the 1960s and 1970s, Sammartino is celebrated for his extraordinary achievement of holding the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship for a staggering total of over 11 years, specifically 4,040 days, during two separate reigns. His first reign remains a record-breaking 2,803 days, making it the longest single title reign in the promotion's history.
Affectionately known as "The Italian Strongman" and "The Strongest Man in the World" during his early career, Sammartino later earned the esteemed title of "The Living Legend." His signature finishing move, the powerful bearhug, contributed to his reputation as one of the most revered figures in professional wrestling history.
After retiring, Sammartino became an outspoken critic of the increasing drug use and sensationalist storylines that pervaded the wrestling world. Nevertheless, in a show of reconciliation, he returned to WWE in 2013, where he was honored as the headliner of that year's Hall of Fame ceremony. Fellow wrestler Terry Funk once remarked that Sammartino "was bigger than wrestling itself," a fitting tribute to a man whose impact on the sport is undeniable.
