Joseph Isadore Lieberman (February 24, 1942 – March 27, 2024) was a notable American politician and attorney, prominently serving as the Senator from Connecticut from 1989 until 2013. Initially affiliated with the Democratic Party, he was the vice presidential nominee alongside Al Gore in the closely contested 2000 election, making history as the first Jewish candidate on a major party ticket in the U.S.

Lieberman began his political career in 1970, winning a seat in the Connecticut Senate, where he held the position of majority leader for three terms. Following a failed attempt to secure a U.S. House seat in 1980, he became Connecticut's attorney general from 1983 to 1989. His ascent to the Senate came in 1988 when he defeated incumbent Lowell Weicker, and he successfully won re-election in 1994, 2000, and 2006. Although he lost the Democratic primary in 2006, Lieberman triumphed in the general election as a candidate for the Connecticut for Lieberman party.

Throughout his Senate tenure, Lieberman was recognized as an Independent Democrat, often collaborating with the Democratic Caucus. His endorsement of John McCain at the 2008 Republican National Convention marked a significant shift in his political alignment. Lieberman played a pivotal role in key legislation, including the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010 and the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security. He became a crucial vote in the passage of the Affordable Care Act, influencing its final structure by opposing the public health insurance option. His political endorsements continued into the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, supporting Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, respectively.
