Christian Alexander Maria Graf Strachwitz von Groß-Zauche und Camminetz, widely known as Chris Strachwitz, was a prominent figure in the American music industry, renowned for his contributions as a record label executive and producer. Born in Germany, Strachwitz emigrated to the United States, where he became a passionate advocate for folk and traditional music, particularly from the American South.
In 1960, Strachwitz founded Arhoolie Records, a label dedicated to preserving and promoting a diverse array of roots music, from blues and bluegrass to Cajun and Tex-Mex. His keen ear for talent led him to produce notable albums and collaborate with legendary artists, including the likes of Mance Lipscomb, Lightnin' Hopkins, and the great Mississippi John Hurt.
Strachwitz's efforts in the music world earned him recognition and respect, culminating in his induction into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 2016. He was also honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Independent Music in 2019.
