Verne Gagne

Verne Gagne was a multifaceted American figure known for his accomplishments as an amateur and professional wrestler, football player, wrestling trainer, actor, television host, and promoter. He gained prominence as the owner and promoter of the American Wrestling Association (AWA), headquartered in Minneapolis.

In his early athletic career, Gagne excelled as an amateur wrestler, clinching two NCAA championships and earning a spot as an alternate for the U.S. freestyle wrestling team during the 1948 Olympic Games. He transitioned to professional wrestling in 1949, where he would go on to achieve remarkable success. Gagne became an 11-time world champion across major wrestling promotions, with a notable record of ten reigns as the AWA World Heavyweight Champion and one reign as the IWA World Heavyweight Champion, a title recognized as a world championship in Japan.
