Rutina Wesley, born on February 1, 1979, is a talented American actress celebrated for her compelling performances in film, theater, and television. She gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Tara Thornton on HBO's acclaimed series *True Blood* and as Nova Bordelon in the Oprah Winfrey Network's *Queen Sugar*.

Raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, Wesley is the daughter of professional tap dancer Ivery Wheeler and showgirl Cassandra Wesley. She honed her artistic skills at the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing and Visual Arts, and later pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance from the University of Evansville, graduating in 2001. Wesley furthered her training at the prestigious Juilliard School, where she graduated in 2005, also spending time at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

Wesley made her Broadway debut in David Hare's *The Vertical Hour* in 2006 and participated in the Public Theater’s production of *In Darfur* in 2007. Her film career began with *How She Move*, where she played the lead character, Raya Green, a role that required extensive dance preparation.

Wesley landed the role of Tara Thornton in *True Blood* in 2007, impressing creator Alan Ball with her ability to convey vulnerability. In 2015, she joined the cast of NBC's *Hannibal* as Reba McClane and later appeared as Liza Warner in *Arrow*. In 2016, she took on the lead role in *Queen Sugar*, produced by Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey. Most recently, in 2023, Wesley appeared as Maria in the HBO series *The Last of Us*. Her diverse roles and dedication to her craft continue to define her successful career.
