Jia Zhangke
Jia Zhangke (贾樟柯; pinyin: Jiǎ Zhāngkē), born on May 24, 1970, in Fenyang, China, is a prominent filmmaker renowned for his contributions as a director, screenwriter, producer, actor, and writer. He holds the position of dean at both the Shanxi Film Academy of Shanxi Media College and the Vancouver Film School at Shanghai University. After graduating from the Beijing Film Academy's Literature Department, Jia emerged as a pivotal figure in the "Sixth Generation" movement of Chinese cinema, which includes notable contemporaries like Wang Xiaoshuai and Lou Ye.
Jia's early works, which form a loose trilogy set in his native Shanxi province, were produced outside the constraints of China's state-run film industry, earning the designation of "underground" films. His breakthrough came in 2004 when he received state approval to direct his fourth feature, The World, markedly increasing his recognition within China. Internationally acclaimed, Jia's films have garnered numerous accolades, including the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for his film Still Life. His achievements have also been recognized through the Leopard of Honour at the Locarno Film Festival in 2010, the Carrosse d'Or lifetime achievement award at Cannes in 2015, and an honorary award at Visions du Réel in 2024. Esteemed philosopher Slavoj Žižek has described him as "one of the top directors in the world today."
