Bill Lee
William James Edwards Lee, born on July 23, 1928, and who passed away on May 24, 2023, was a distinguished American musician renowned for his contributions to the world of music and film. He was the father of acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee and his sibling Joie Lee. Bill Lee made a significant impact in cinema by composing original scores for several iconic films directed by his son, including the groundbreaking works She's Gotta Have It (1986), School Daze (1988), Do the Right Thing (1989), and Mo' Better Blues (1990).
Beyond his work in film, Lee was a vital figure in the jazz scene, particularly associated with the Strata-East record label, where he directed the notable 1980 release, The New York Bass Violin Choir. His versatility as a bassist allowed him to collaborate with a diverse array of artists, including legends such as Chris Anderson, Cat Stevens, Harry Belafonte, Aretha Franklin, Simon and Garfunkel, and Bob Dylan. Remarkably, on Bob Dylan's iconic track "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," Lee was the sole musician accompanying Dylan, showcasing his unique talent. Additionally, he played the bass on Gordon Lightfoot's "Oh, Linda," further demonstrating his significant contributions to the music industry.
