Robert Gunner (July 27, 1931 - December 18, 2001) was a notable American actor best remembered for his portrayal of Lieutenant John Landon in the iconic 1968 film, Planet of the Apes. Standing at six feet one inch and weighing 200 pounds, Gunner hailed from North Plainfield, New Jersey. His journey into acting began with his service in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, where he gained exposure in entertainment through a weekly televised Navy program originating from the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Pursuing his passion for acting, Gunner went on to study under the renowned Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City. His charisma and striking presence soon led him to a successful modeling career, where he famously represented the ‘Marlboro Man’ in various television commercials and magazine advertisements, as well as embodying the ‘Quiet Man’ in Ford’s promotional videos. Prior to his breakout role in Planet of the Apes, he appeared in a supporting role as a detective in Caprice (1967).
