Laura Misch Owens, born on November 23, 1953, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is the daughter of an engineer and a school teacher and is the middle child of three sisters. At the young age of nineteen, she relocated to Louisiana, where she began her career as a Bunny at the Playboy Club in New Orleans. Her striking presence earned her recognition as Playmate of the Month in February 1975 in "Playboy" magazine.

During her time in New Orleans, Laura married a police officer named Eddie, although the marriage ended in divorce. She ventured into acting and appeared in several films throughout the mid to late 1970s, often portraying provocative roles. Notable films from this period include the controversial "Mandingo," the acclaimed "Hard Times," the quirky "French Quarter," and the less-celebrated horror film "Mardi Gras Massacre." Additionally, she featured in a television commercial for Miller Lite beer, showcasing her versatility.

After her time in Louisiana, Laura moved to Miami, Florida, where she transitioned to journalism as a reporter for "The Miami Herald." She later continued her reporting career at "The Rocky Mountain News" in Denver, Colorado. There, she married her second husband, Joe Watt. In 1997, under her married name, Laura Watt, she published her debut novel, "Carry Me Back," marking a significant milestone in her writing career.
