1 title Acting Apr 03, 1941 Died: Mar 26, 2004 Los Angeles, California, U.S

William Jan Berry, born on April 3, 1941, in Los Angeles, California, was the son of Clara Lorentze Mustad, a Norwegian immigrant, and aeronautical engineer William L. Berry. Growing up in the affluent Bel Air neighborhood, Jan was influenced by a family deeply rooted in innovation; his father was a project manager for Howard Hughes, notably involved in the historic "Spruce Goose" and even participated in its singular flight.

Jan Berry is best known as one half of the iconic surf rock duo Jan and Dean, who emerged in the 1960s. Alongside his musical partner Dean Torrence, Berry crafted a string of hits that defined the California sound, including timeless classics like "Surf City," which he co-wrote with Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, and "Little Old Lady from Pasadena." Their music captured the carefree spirit of the surf culture and youth of that era.

Throughout his career, Berry not only excelled as a performer but also as a songwriter and producer. He played a pivotal role in the burgeoning surf music scene and left a lasting legacy that continues to influence musicians. Tragically, Berry's life was marked by health challenges, including a serious car accident in 1966 that affected his ability to perform. Despite these obstacles, he continued to create music until his passing on March 26, 2004, leaving behind a rich catalog that celebrates the joys of youth and the essence of California culture.
