George Alphonsus Cooper was born in Leeds in 1925. After his education, he pursued qualifications in electrical engineering and architecture. His career path took a turn when he was conscripted for National Service, serving with the Royal Artillery in India. It was during this time that he discovered his passion for performance, leading him to join Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop in Manchester upon his return.

To distinguish himself from American actor George Cooper, he adopted his middle initial for his stage name. His television debut came in 1946, and over the next five decades, he became a familiar face on British television, often cast as amusingly inept authority figures. A significant highlight of his career was his role as Willie Piggott on ITV's Coronation Street, where he became known for his attempts to bribe Ken Barlow regarding his son Brian's exam.

Cooper also had notable roles in the police dramas Z-Cars and Dixon of Dock Green, and in 1960 he appeared in the West End production of Billy Liar as the father of the protagonist, later reprising this role in the 1973 television adaptation. His comedic talents shone in series such as Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, Sykes, and Mind Your Language. From 1985, he portrayed Eric Griffiths, the strict caretaker in the beloved children’s drama Grange Hill, a role that endeared him to many young viewers. His final television appearance was in a 1995 episode of Casualty. George Cooper passed away in a nursing home in Hampshire on November 16, 2018.
