William Russell

William Russell Enoch (19 November 1924 – 3 June 2024) was a distinguished English actor whose career spanned several decades and left an indelible mark on television and film. He rose to fame in 1956 when he starred as the titular character in ITV's The Adventures of Sir Lancelot, a role that showcased his charisma and acting prowess.

In 1963, Russell became a key figure in television history when he joined the original cast of BBC1's iconic series Doctor Who. He portrayed Ian Chesterton, a schoolteacher who traveled through time and space alongside the First Doctor, played by William Hartnell. Russell's involvement in the show lasted until 1965, cementing his status as a beloved figure among fans.

His film career includes notable performances in The Man Who Never Was (1956), The Great Escape (1963), and the superhero classic Superman (1978). On the small screen, he made a memorable appearance as Ted Sullivan in the long-running soap opera Coronation Street in 1992.

In a heartwarming return to his roots, Russell reprised his role as Ian Chesterton in 2022 for the Doctor Who special "The Power of the Doctor," marking a remarkable 57 years since his character last appeared.
