Astra Taylor

Astra Taylor, born in 1979 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, is a prominent Canadian-American filmmaker and author renowned for her thought-provoking documentaries. Her cinematic career gained significant recognition with the release of *Zizek!* in 2005, a compelling exploration of the ideas of Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek. Following this, her 2008 film, *Examined Life*, further solidified her reputation, delving into the intersection of philosophy and everyday life.

Raised in Athens, Georgia, Taylor was unschooled until the age of 13, which shaped her unique perspective on education and learning. She briefly attended Brown University before earning a Master’s degree in Liberal Studies from the New School. Her academic journey led her to teach sociology at institutions such as the University of Georgia and SUNY New Paltz.
