Julieta Szönyi
Julieta Ivanca Szönyi (May 13, 1949 – April 18, 2025) was a renowned Romanian actress of Hungarian heritage, celebrated for her captivating performances in both film and television, which earned her a cherished place in Romanian culture.
Born in Timișoara, Szönyi relocated to Bucharest at the tender age of four. She honed her acting skills at the prestigious I. L. Caragiale National University of Theatre and Film, setting the foundation for a prolific career that would resonate with audiences for decades. Her breakthrough came in 1972 when she portrayed Otilia Mărculescu in *Felix și Otilia*, a cinematic adaptation of George Călinescu’s novel. Her portrayal was lauded for its emotional nuance and artistry, establishing her as a prominent figure in Romanian cinema.
Szönyi's television acclaim soared with her role as Adnana in the iconic series *Toate pânzele sus!* (1976–77), further solidifying her status as a cultural icon. Her impressive filmography includes notable works such as *Ecaterina Teodoroiu* (1978), *Falansterul* (1979), and *The Whistlers* (2019), showcasing her ability to imbue her characters with depth and sophistication.
