Mona Sahlin

1 title Acting Mar 09, 1957 Sollefteå, Sweden

Mona Ingeborg Sahlin, born on March 9, 1957, is a prominent Swedish politician known for her leadership within the Swedish Social Democratic Party. She served as the party's leader from 2007 until 2011, marking a significant chapter in her political career as she became the first woman to hold this position.

Sahlin's political journey began when she was elected as a Member of Parliament for Stockholm County, a role she held from 1982 to 1996 and then again from 2002 to 2011. Her extensive experience includes various ministerial roles in the Swedish government, where she served from 1990 to 1991, 1994 to 1995, and 1998 to 2006. She ascended to the leadership of the Social Democratic Party on March 17, 2007, following Göran Persson's resignation after the 2006 general election defeat.

Notably, Sahlin became the first leader of the party since Claes Tholin in 1907 to not have served as Prime Minister of Sweden. After facing challenges in the 2010 elections, she announced her decision to resign as party chairman in November 2010, officially stepping down in early 2011. Her tenure marked a transformative period for the party, reflecting both her pioneering role as a female leader and the evolving landscape of Swedish politics.
