Fons Rademakers

Alphonse Marie "Fons" Rademakers (September 5, 1920 – February 22, 2007) was a prominent Dutch figure known for his multifaceted contributions to cinema as an actor, director, producer, and screenwriter. Rademakers made a significant mark in the film industry, particularly with his 1960 movie *Makkers Staakt uw Wild Geraas*, which garnered the Silver Bear Award at the 11th Berlin International Film Festival, showcasing his talent on an international stage.

Over his illustrious career, Rademakers directed a total of 11 films, with notable titles such as *The Assault*, which earned him the prestigious Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1986. This achievement made him the first Dutch filmmaker to both win and receive a nomination for this esteemed accolade, following his earlier nomination for *The Village on the River* in 1959.

In 1987, he shared insights into his life and career during a comprehensive interview with Radio Netherlands, reflecting on his artistic journey and the evolution of Dutch cinema. Rademakers passed away in 2007 at a hospital in Geneva, succumbing to emphysema after requesting to have his life support withdrawn. His legacy endures through his impactful works that have shaped the landscape of Dutch film.
