Evgeniy Maloletka

1 title Crew Berdyansk, USSR, Ukraine

Evgeniy Maloletka is a distinguished Ukrainian war photographer, journalist, and filmmaker renowned for his impactful visual storytelling amid conflict. Since 2014, he has been documenting the war in Ukraine, capturing the resilience of its people through his lens. His portfolio includes coverage of the Euromaidan Revolution, protests in Belarus, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and the COVID-19 pandemic in Ukraine.

Born in Berdyansk by the Azov Sea, Maloletka graduated from the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in 2010. He began his career in 2009 as a staff photographer for various Ukrainian media outlets before transitioning to freelance work, where he collaborated with major organizations like the Associated Press, Al Jazeera, and Der Spiegel.

During the harrowing siege of Mariupol in early 2022, Maloletka, alongside Associated Press colleague Mstyslav Chernov, was one of the few international journalists present. Their powerful imagery documented the dire circumstances faced by civilians and garnered significant media attention, despite the Russian government's claims of targeting only military sites. On March 11, 2022, they were safely extracted from the city by Ukrainian soldiers while capturing poignant moments in a local hospital.

Maloletka's courageous work has earned him numerous accolades, including the Knight International Journalism Award, the Visa d’or News Award, and the Prix Bayeux Calvados-Normandie in 2022. His earlier achievements include multiple awards at prestigious photo contests and recognition from international organizations across Europe and the United States. Through his work, he aims to reveal the stark realities of war and the indomitable spirit of ordinary Ukrainians.
