He is best remembered for his iconic role as Barnabas Collins in the cult classic television series *Dark Shadows*, which captivated audiences from 1967 to 1971 and played a pivotal role in elevating the show's popularity.

Frid, originally named John Herbert Frid, began his acting journey in 1946, showcasing his talent in various stage productions, including notable Shakespearean plays. He graduated from McMaster University in 1948 and later obtained a Master of Fine Arts from Yale University in 1957. His early career spanned Canadian television and theater, but it was his portrayal of the vampire Barnabas that became his defining moment. Frid also featured in films, such as *House of Dark Shadows* (1970) and *The Devil’s Daughter* (1973), and made a memorable cameo in the 2012 *Dark Shadows* film.

In addition to his screen work, Frid took to the stage, performing in productions like *Arsenic and Old Lace* from 1986 to 1987. He retired to Ancaster, Ontario, in 1994 but remained involved in the entertainment world, directing *The Lion in Winter* in 1993 and attending *Dark Shadows* fan events until 2011. He passed away at the age of 87 due to pneumonia complications, leaving a legacy that has influenced modern vampire narratives, as seen in series like *True Blood*. Frid's estate was bequeathed to the Hamilton Community Foundation.
