Fernando Poe Jr.
Ronald Allan Kelley Poe, born on August 20, 1939, in San Carlos City, Pangasinan, is widely recognized as Fernando Poe Jr. or FPJ, and affectionately referred to as "Da King." He was a prominent figure in Filipino cinema, celebrated for his extensive career as an action film star, which earned him the title of "King of Philippine Movies." His legacy is marked by numerous hit films that resonated with audiences, solidifying his status as a cultural icon.
In 2004, Poe ventured into politics, running for the presidency against incumbent Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The election concluded with a controversial result, widely perceived as fraudulent, which led to his defeat. Despite the setback, his influence in Philippine society remained significant.
Poe's contributions to the arts were posthumously recognized when he was declared a National Artist of the Philippines for Film on May 23, 2006, by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. This honor was reaffirmed by President Benigno Aquino III on July 20, 2012, and later presented to his family on August 16.
The son of actor Fernando Poe Sr. and American Elizabeth Kelley, FPJ faced challenges due to his lineage, including attempts by political rivals to question his eligibility for the presidency. He was the second of six siblings, and although his brother Andy was originally named Fernando Poe Jr., FPJ adopted the name to honor their father's legacy. His family name, originally spelled "Pou," traces back to his grandfather, a Catalan immigrant who made his mark in the Philippines.
