David Hemblen was a distinguished English actor known for his extensive contributions to Canadian cinema, television, and theatre. Born on September 16, 1941, in London, England, he relocated to Toronto, Ontario, where he initially pursued a classical education. He earned a Master of Arts in English and was in the process of obtaining a Ph.D. in medieval studies when his talent was discovered by Clifford Williams from the Royal Shakespeare Company during a university rehearsal. This led to a season at Toronto's prestigious Royal Alexandra Theatre.

Throughout his career, Hemblen showcased his theatrical prowess in numerous productions at the Stratford Festival and spent four seasons at the acclaimed Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake. His notable performance as Dr. Astrov in Tarragon Theatre’s production of Uncle Vanya earned him a Dora Award nomination for Best Actor. Additionally, he was nominated for a Genie Award for Best Actor in Family Viewing.

Hemblen's television career took off in the early 1970s, featuring roles in popular Canadian series such as The Beachcombers, Night Heat, and Street Legal, along with recurring parts in the American shows T. and T. and The X-Files. He is perhaps best remembered for his portrayal of Johnathan Doors in the sci-fi series Earth: Final Conflict, spanning from 1994 to 2002, as well as voicing the iconic character Magneto in the X-Men animated series from 1992 to 1997.

David Hemblen passed away on November 16, 2020, in Toronto, at the age of 79. He is survived by his wife, actress Kate Nelligan, and their two daughters.
