Drew McWeeny
Drew McWeeny, born on May 26, 1970, is a prominent film critic, screenwriter, and former west coast editor for Ain't It Cool News, where he was known by the pseudonym Moriarty. In December 2008, he announced his transition to HitFix.com, marking a significant shift in his career.
Although he attended Florida State University, McWeeny opted to pursue a career in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles rather than complete his degree. He is a devoted father to two sons, Toshiro Lucas McWeeny, born in 2005, and Allen Miles McWeeny, born in 2008.
His career has not been without controversy; in 1999, a screenplay he co-wrote received a positive review from Harry Knowles on Ain't It Cool News, which led to accusations of ethical missteps when Knowles failed to disclose McWeeny's connection to the site. At that time, McWeeny was employed as a closed caption editor at VITAC.
Transitioning into television, McWeeny collaborated with Scott Swan to write two episodes for the acclaimed series Masters of Horror, both directed by the legendary John Carpenter. They also penned "Skin and Bones" for NBC’s horror anthology Fear Itself. Notably, McWeeny and Swan's screenplay "Bat Out of Hell" was slated for direction by Joe Dante in 2008. Despite facing a ban from Twentieth Century Fox press screenings, McWeeny remains an influential voice in film criticism.
