Vivian Maier
Vivian Dorothy Maier (February 1, 1926 – April 21, 2009) was a renowned American street photographer whose artistic legacy emerged posthumously. Over her lifetime, she captured more than 150,000 images, primarily focusing on the urban landscapes and inhabitants of cities such as Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, though her travels took her to various locations worldwide.
Despite her prolific output, Maier’s work remained largely unknown and unexhibited during her life, with many of her film negatives left undeveloped. The turning point came in 2007 when John Maloof, a collector from Chicago, stumbled upon a collection of her photographs. Simultaneously, other local collectors, Ron Slattery and Randy Prow, unearthed additional prints and negatives stored away in her boxes and suitcases. Slattery first shared some of her photographs online in July 2008, but the reception was minimal. However, in October 2009, Maloof connected his blog to a curated selection of Maier's photographs on Flickr, leading to a viral response that captivated a wide audience.
This newfound interest culminated in critical acclaim for Maier’s work, and her photography has since been shown in exhibitions globally. Today, she is celebrated as a significant figure in the field of street photography, with her unique perspective and artistry recognized long after her passing.
