Maria Foka

Maria Foka (Greek: Μαρία Φωκά; Argostoli, October 1, 1916 – London, June 15, 2001) was a prominent Greek actress known for her powerful performances and her commitment to leftist activism. Born to Nikolaos Th. Fokas, a sea captain, and Kaikilia Kountouri, she emerged as a formidable talent in the Greek theater and television landscape.

In the 1950s, Foka faced significant personal and political challenges when she was convicted as a spy during the high-profile trial of Nikos Belogiannis. Initially sentenced to life in prison, her sentence was later reduced to ten years, during which she lost her political rights. Despite this setback, she remained an influential figure, serving as President of the Greek Actors' Union (SEI) in 1977.

Foka's television career flourished in her later years, and she became beloved for her roles as a matriarch, particularly in the series "Ekmek Pagato" and "Dolce Vita," where she won acclaim for her portrayal of Olga Markatou. Her final television appearance was in the 2000 series "Oi Theosevoumoni."

Foka passed away on June 15, 2001, in London, after battling heart problems, leaving behind a legacy as one of Greece's most cherished actresses. Her contributions to the arts and her resilience in the face of adversity have solidified her place in Greek cultural history.
