Mary Margaret Wood, known as Peggy Wood, was a multifaceted American actress renowned for her impactful contributions to stage, film, and television. She gained prominence for her portrayal of the titular character in the CBS series *Mama*, earning a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Wood’s film career included notable performances as Naomi in *The Story of Ruth* and as Mother Abbess in the iconic *The Sound of Music*, which brought her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.

Her artistic journey began with vocal training in France under the celebrated soprano Emma Calve. Returning to the United States, she became an influential figure in theater, marking her Broadway debut in 1910 with *Naughty Marietta*. By 1917, she gained recognition for introducing the poignant song "Will You Remember" in *Maytime* and later starred as Portia in a 1928 rendition of *The Merchant of Venice*. She also featured in Noel Coward’s original London production of *Bitter Sweet*.
