Ralph Northam
Ralph Shearer Northam, born on September 13, 1959, is an American physician and politician who held the office of the 73rd governor of Virginia from 2018 to 2022. As a trained pediatric neurologist, Northam served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1984 to 1992, showcasing his commitment to public service and healthcare. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as Virginia's 40th lieutenant governor from 2014 to 2018. Northam's tenure as governor began after his victory over Republican candidate Ed Gillespie in the 2017 election, reflecting his strong support among Virginia voters.
During his governorship, he focused on various progressive initiatives including healthcare reform and social justice, earning a reputation as a dedicated leader. However, his time in office was also marked by controversy, which he navigated with a commitment to transparency and accountability. Due to provisions in the Virginia Constitution that prevent consecutive terms, Northam concluded his governorship in January 2022 and was succeeded by Republican Glenn Youngkin. His time in public office has significantly influenced the political landscape in Virginia, promoting dialogue on critical issues facing the state.
