Sapho, born Danielle Ebguy in 1950 in Marrakech, Morocco, is a celebrated French-Moroccan singer whose eclectic musical style has captivated audiences worldwide. At the age of 16, she relocated to France, and by 18, she was living independently in Paris, immersing herself in acting and music. Encouraged by a musician friend, she auditioned for the prestigious Le Petit Conservatoire de Mireille, ultimately deciding to pursue music full-time. Her debut album, *Le Balayeur du Rex*, was released in 1977 by RCA.

After a year in New York City, where she worked as a French journalist and performed in various clubs, Sapho recorded her sophomore album, *Janis*, in London in 1980. Over the next three years, she released three more albums before pausing to compile a book featuring cartoons from the iconic Brasserie La Coupole in Paris.

In 1985, she made a significant return to music with *Passions, passons*, marking her shift from rock to the Middle Eastern sounds of her youth, which she showcased in performances at Le Bataclan in Paris. Her subsequent works, including *El Sol y la luna* and the acclaimed *Jardin Andalou* (1996), exhibited her innovative blend of rock and Arabic influences.

Sapho's artistic pursuits extended beyond music; she authored two novels, participated in a film about the Intifada, and even performed in a production of *The Threepenny Opera*. Starting in 1992, she dedicated herself to the music of legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum, touring internationally. Her later projects, including *Digital Sheikha* and *Sapho chante Léo Ferré – Ferré Flamenco*, reflect her diverse influences, culminating in her latest album, *Universelle*, which showcases her journey through various genres.
