Karuna Banerjee
Karuna Banerjee (Bengali: করুণা ব্যানার্জী) was a renowned Bengali actress celebrated for her poignant portrayal of Sarbajaya, the resilient mother in Satyajit Ray's iconic Apu Trilogy, encompassing the films Pather Panchali (1955) and Aparajito (1956). Her compelling performance in Aparajito earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the 1959 BAFTA Awards, solidifying her status as a prominent figure in Indian cinema.
Born in Kolkata, Banerjee received her education at Jogamaya Devi College, which is part of the University of Calcutta. Over her extensive career spanning more than two decades, she made significant contributions to Bengali cinema and theatre. Following her notable work in The Apu Trilogy, she collaborated with Ray again in films such as Devi (1960) and Kanchenjungha (1962), showcasing her versatility and depth as an actress.
