David Hodo
David Hodo, born Richard Davis Hodo on July 7, 1947, is an accomplished American dancer and singer renowned for his role as the construction worker in the iconic disco group Village People. His tenure with the band spanned from 1978 to 1982 and again from 1987 until his retirement in 2013.
Hodo's journey began in San Andreas, California, where he was raised in Sacramento. He graduated from California State University, Sacramento in 1969, earning a degree in speech while performing in several theatrical productions, including Oh What a Lovely War and Richard III. His passion for the arts led him to New York City in 1972, where he made his Broadway debut in the musical Doctor Jazz three years later. Hodo showcased his talents in various productions, including a touring version of Funny Girl and a Broadway revival of Pal Joey.
Joining Village People in 1978 marked a significant turning point in his career. During this period, the group achieved immense commercial success, highlighted by their appearance in the 1980 musical film Can't Stop the Music, alongside celebrities like Cher and Hugh Hefner. Hodo's vibrant personality also led him to guest appearances on popular television shows such as Married With Children and The Love Boat.
In addition to his work with Village People, Hodo released a cover of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" in 2002 and an EP in 2008 featuring the poignant single "The Kids'll Be Fine," which addressed the troubling issue of school shootings in America.
