Rika Aoki
Rika Aoki, originally named Sharon-Lee Yoshida (Morris), was born to an American father and a Japanese mother, embodying a blend of cultures that would later influence her career. She adopted the name Rika Aoki, taken from her manga character, which was fitting given her striking height of 5'7", well above the average for Japanese women, and her resemblance to the leggy heroine. Taro Bonten, the manga's creator, hailed her as a perfect match for the role. Despite her talents, Rika has shown humility regarding her appearance, reflecting on her mixed heritage with self-deprecating humor: “I look like a monkey, just like my papa."
Her athleticism shone during her high school years, where she excelled in track and field, clocking an impressive 12.9 seconds in the 100-meter dash, securing her second place in the national high school rankings. In preparation for her acting debut, Rika underwent rigorous training in acting, modern ballet, and singing, aiming to become a multifaceted star.
Her first single was released in June 1972, ahead of the film's debut, generating significant buzz. Rika also became a familiar face on television as the “cover girl” for popular variety shows like Yo! Don and The 11PM Show. By the time her film premiered, Rika Aoki was already on her way to becoming a household name, drawing nationwide attention and acclaim.
