Keiko Awaji
Keiko Awaji, born in 1933, is a renowned Japanese actress whose career has left a significant mark on the film industry. She gained prominence for her role in Akira Kurosawa’s acclaimed film "Stray Dog," showcasing her talent in a powerful narrative. Another notable performance was her portrayal of Kimiko in "The Bridges at Toko-Ri," where she shared the screen with legendary actors William Holden and Mickey Rooney.
Awaji’s personal life included two marriages. Her first husband was Filipino musician and actor Rodrigo "Bimbo" Danao, with whom she had two children, including actor Etsuo Shima. Her second marriage was to Japanese actor Yorozuya Kinnosuke, but the couple divorced in 1987. Tragically, their eldest son, Akihiro, passed away in a car accident in 1990. In a disturbing turn of events, her youngest son, Kichinosuke Yorozuya (Satoshi Ida), faced legal issues, including a six-month prison sentence for breaking into her home, and ultimately took his own life in 2010.
Beyond her film career, Awaji was an avid fan of the Dragon Quest video game series, expressing a desire to play one last game before her passing. Sadly, she succumbed to esophageal cancer on January 11, 2014, in Tokyo, at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy in both cinema and the hearts of her fans.
