Nia Long, born on October 30, 1970, is a prominent American actress and occasional music video director, celebrated for her captivating performances in both television and film. She gained widespread recognition for her roles in the iconic television series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and the gripping drama Third Watch. Long's filmography includes standout performances in critically acclaimed movies such as Soul Food, Love Jones, The Best Man, Big Momma's House, and Are We There Yet?

Raised in Brooklyn, New York, Long hails from Afro-Trinidadian ancestry. After her parents' divorce when she was just two, she relocated with her mother to Iowa City, Iowa, before settling in South Los Angeles at the age of seven. Long's artistic journey began early; she attended St. Mary's Academy, where she studied various performing arts disciplines. After graduating from Westchester High School in 1989, she landed her first significant role on the soap opera Guiding Light, where she portrayed Kathryn "Kat" Speakes from 1991 to 1994.

Long continued to build her career with memorable roles in films such as Boyz n the Hood and Friday, as well as a successful collaboration with Ice Cube in several projects. Her work on Third Watch earned her a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series in 2004. In addition to her acting, she has directed music videos for artists like Yolanda Adams and Ashanti. Long shares a son, Massai Zhivago Dorsey II, with her former partner Massai Z. Dorsey.
