Franklin Cover
Franklin Edward Cover (November 20, 1928 – February 5, 2006) was a distinguished American actor celebrated for his role as Tom Willis on the groundbreaking sitcom The Jeffersons. His character represented one of the first interracial marriages depicted in prime-time television, showcasing the evolving landscape of American society.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Cover was the son of Britta (Schreck) and Franklin Held Cover. After graduating from John Marshall High School in 1947, he pursued higher education at Denison University, earning his degree in 1951. He further honed his craft at Case Western Reserve University, where he obtained both his MA and MFA in Theater in 1954 and 1955, respectively.
Cover's acting career commenced on stage, performing in classic plays such as Henry IV, Part 1, and Hamlet. He also starred alongside Julie Harris in Forty Carats and made his television debut in Naked City, followed by appearances on The Jackie Gleason Show.
In 1965, he wed Mary Bradford Stone. His most notable role came in 1975 when he began portraying Tom Willis in The Jeffersons, which ran until 1985. He also appeared in the film The Stepford Wives and played Hubert Humphrey in the TV movie A Woman Called Golda.
After The Jeffersons, Cover continued to feature in various television shows and had a notable role in the film Wall Street (1987). His final television appearance occurred in a 1999 episode of Will & Grace. Cover passed away in 2006 from pneumonia while residing in an actors' home in New Jersey, leaving behind a legacy of significant contributions to American television and theater. He is survived by his wife, two children, and a grandson.
