Rashida Tlaib
Rashida Harbi Tlaib, born on July 24, 1976, is a prominent American politician and attorney, currently serving as the U.S. representative for Michigan's 12th congressional district since 2019, a position she embraced after the district was re-designated from the 13th congressional district. Her constituency encompasses the western part of Detroit and several surrounding suburbs, including Dearborn and Southfield. A committed member of the Democratic Party, Tlaib previously held positions representing Michigan's 6th and 12th districts in the state legislature.
In 2018, Tlaib achieved a significant milestone by securing the Democratic nomination for the U.S. House seat in Michigan's 13th district, running unopposed in the general election. This victory marked her as the first Palestinian-American woman to serve in Congress, one of the first two Muslim women ever elected to the House, alongside Ilhan Omar. She is also part of "The Squad," a coalition of progressive lawmakers advocating for leftist policies.
Tlaib, along with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, became the first female representatives affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America. Known for her outspoken nature, she has called for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, consistently challenged the Trump administration, and pushed for impeachment proceedings against him. On foreign policy, her stance is critical of the Israeli government, advocating for a one-state solution and supporting the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement.
